Highway Bridge Columns Several Bridges in the Northeast

Problem

Many bridges in the Northeast United States suffer from severe damage due to corrosion of rebars in many part of the structure including columns. Replacement of such a large inventory of damaged columns is not a practical solution. Furthermore, many conventional repair methods such as patching with new concrete and welding rebars have proven ineffective, time consuming, and costly.

Solution

CarbonWrap™ Solutions, LLC provided the States with an effective and economical solution involving filling the spalled areas with high strength PolyCon500, and wrapping the column with CarbonWrap™ fabric. The polymer based PolyCon500 created a super strong bond with the old concrete, eliminating the possibility of failure at the cold joint. The high strength CarbonWrap™ fabric made up for the Lost steel area due to corrosion and protected the steel from future corrosion caused by deicing salts, through sealing of the core concrete and steel.
