Problem

The Bay Area Rapid Transit System (BART) owns numerous bridges, tunnels and buildings in northern California. Many of these structures were designed before the new seismic design requirements were in place. Consequently, many of these structures are currently considered deficient with regard to seismic forces. CarbonWrap™ Solutions, LLC performed the first ever application of this technology for BART.

Furthermore, the lightweight of CarbonWrap™ did not increase the column mass, resulting in significantly improved seismic performance as compared to conventional technologies

Solution

CarbonWrap™ was used to strengthen the six foot diameter, hexagonal columns at a fraction of the time and cost of other alternatives. The retrofit was aesthetically pleasing, with no alteration of the original architectural features.
